Germany Overhauls Vehicle Registration System for Efficiency

The German government is revamping the digital vehicle registration system to improve efficiency and citizen experience. Local registration offices will shift focus to consultation and proximity, while the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) centralizes online portals. Currently, only 15.6% of vehicle registration procedures are digital. In August, 6.7% used the KBA's large customer interface (GKS) and 8.9% local i-Kfz portals, out of approximately 1.8 million registrations. The restructuring aims to standardize and speed up the process. The KBA will bundle previously decentralized online portals for internet-based vehicle registration (i-Kfz). Local registration offices will refocus, with released personnel taking on new tasks in administrations. PremiumZulasser eG, a nationwide association of registration service providers, welcomes this decision. The federal government's modernization plans include this reform. Florian Cichon, chairman of PremiumZulasser eG, urges prioritization of measures to speed up, standardize, and ensure reliability of digital vehicle registration.
