Global artisan economy of Aba receives boost with Shoptreo garnering seed investment for worldwide expansion
Shoptreo, a Nigerian e-commerce startup, has secured an investment from Rebel Seed Capital. This funding will be used to digitally connect grassroots artisans, particularly leatherworkers in the Aba Artisanal Leather Cluster, to international markets.
The Aba leather sector, like many informal manufacturing hubs, often faces challenges such as limited digital infrastructure, inadequate financing, and restricted export access. Shoptreo's goal is to address these barriers by integrating e-commerce, financial services, and logistics into a locally adapted platform designed for global reach.
Shoptreo's growth strategy centers on digitizing and formalizing the informal artisanal supply chains of the Aba Artisanal Leather Cluster. This strategy aims to connect grassroots leather artisans directly to international markets by providing a comprehensive e-commerce platform.
Key elements of Shoptreo’s growth strategy include digital storefronts for artisan-led businesses, integrated inventory and order management systems, built-in logistics and payment solutions, and inventory financing options to bulk buyers and distributors. By leveraging technology, Shoptreo aims to formalize traditionally informal production systems, improving operational efficiency and market reach.
Emeka Okoye, Managing Partner at Rebel Seed Capital, views the Aba Artisanal Leather Cluster as having immense untapped potential. He believes digital transformation can make it a powerful engine for wealth creation.
With rising global interest in ethically sourced, handcrafted products, platforms like Shoptreo empower artisans to enter international markets while preserving their unique identity and traditional craftsmanship.
Shoptreo was established by George Uteh and Emmanuel Jacobs in 2021. Their mission is to unlock the untapped global demand for Aba’s premium handcrafted leather goods and drive wealth creation within the artisan community.
The funding will be used to upgrade Shoptreo’s platform and tech systems for global sales and B2B logistics. Shoptreo also intends to reinforce its logistics and financial service partnerships for dependable order fulfillment and smooth international transactions.
George Uteh, CEO of Shoptreo, believes Rebel Seed Capital's investment will allow them to scale operations and showcase Aba's premium leather craftsmanship on a global stage. This investment provides the capital to scale operations, accelerate digital adoption among artisans, and expand Shoptreo’s reach to the international market, effectively transforming Aba’s artisanal leather industry into a scalable, tech-enabled export sector.
