The Goods and Services Tax (GST) return is a crucial document that every taxpayer with a GSTIN number must file to declare taxes levied on their services and products to the government. In this article, we will guide you through the process of filing GST returns online.

To start, visit the official portal www.gst.gov.in. Upon arrival, fill in your state code and PAN card number. Once logged in, navigate to the Service and then the Returns section. Here, you can prepare offline returns by selecting 'Prepare Offline' and then clicking on 'generate file' to get the GST returns document as a Zip file.

The GST returns document can be used to file the GSTR-1 and GSTR-2 return forms offline. GSTR-1 and GSTR-2 are interconnected in the GST return filing process, with GSTR-1 being for outward supply and GSTR-2 for inward supplies.

For outward supply, file returns as per GSTR 1 before the 10th of each month. If your business has multiple invoices, each one should be uploaded and a reference number obtained. After filing, verify and validate the returns for outward supply by clearly mentioning debit and credit notes.

GSTR 2 is divided into GSTR-2A for dynamic entries and GSTR-2B for static purchases and immutable entries. GSTR-2A provides information on the outward returns furnished at the supplier's end. For inward supplies, file returns as per GSTR 2.

It is essential to check the status of the GST return regularly to keep a tab on pending payments or discrepancies. The GST return document can be rejected or accepted by the supplier or the business owner, depending on the authenticity of the statements.

A 15-digit number will be assigned when you file the GST returns, which should be kept for future reference. The GST returns process is an integral part of maintaining a compliant and transparent business, ensuring that you meet your tax obligations and stay on the right side of the law.
