Hamburg & Lower Saxony Team Up for Hydrogen Freight Transport
Hamburg and Lower Saxony are teaming up to decarbonize transportation, focusing on replacing diesel engines with hydrogen in freight transport. The 'Clean Cargo Connect' project, led by H2.N.O.N and Renewable Energies Hamburg, has applied for €15 million in federal funding under the HyPerformer II program.
The region between Hamburg and Bremen holds great promise for hydrogen-powered vehicles in heavy-duty transportation and public transportation. The 'Clean Cargo Connect' project aims to expand the hydrogen refueling station infrastructure, adding five new stations for commercial vehicles and two mobile refueling solutions. This expansion is part of a €32 million project volume.
In 2021, approximately 40 percent of goods reaching the Port of Hamburg were subsequently transported by truck in the hinterland. The project seeks to have over 150 H2 trucks in use by 2029, with at least 30 fuel cell vehicles on the road by 2026. The federal decision on HyPerformer II funding is expected in April 2023.
The 'Clean Cargo Connect' project plans to produce green hydrogen regionally using a two-megawatt electrolyzer for refueling freight transport. This initiative supports the goal of reducing emissions in the transportation sector and promotes the use of sustainable energy sources.
