High-Profile Court Case Begins: AMI vs Meta Over Digital Advertising

On Wednesday, witnesses will take the stand in a high-profile court case involving AMI (American Media Inc.) and Meta. The trial, which began in Spain, has global implications for news media and digital advertising. Meta denies any wrongdoing and maintains compliance with EU laws.

AMI, representing major Spanish media groups like Prisa, Godo, Vocento, and Unidad Editorial, accuses Meta of unfair competition in digital advertising sales. The lawsuit, seeking 551 million euros ($647 million), alleges systematic breaches of EU laws between May 2018 and July 2023. Meta, however, denies any damage or violation of EU rules, claiming AMI's lawsuit lacks evidence.

The trial, set to conclude on Thursday with expert reports and closing arguments, comes amidst a similar lawsuit in France involving around 200 media groups. Meanwhile, Spanish radio and television stations have launched a separate lawsuit against Meta, seeking 160 million euros in damages. EU rules require companies to obtain users' consent for personalised advertising, a key point of contention in the case.

The outcome of this trial could have significant implications for news media survival and digital advertising practices. AMI director general Irene Lanzaco has stressed the global importance of the case. Despite Meta's denial of any wrongdoing and assertion of compliance with applicable laws, the trial continues, with witnesses set to testify on Wednesday.
