Holzwickede Companies Heat with 100% Green Hydrogen in Pioneering Project

In Holzwickede, near Dortmund, three local companies have begun using hydrogen boilers from Weishaupt to generate heat in a climate-neutral way. This innovative project, named 'H2HoWi', kicked off in October 2022, supplied with 100% green hydrogen via a repurposed public gas pipeline by Westnetz GmbH.

Westnetz has been at the forefront of this transition, transporting pure green hydrogen through a converted natural gas pipeline since last October. The H2HoWi research project, scientifically backed by the German Energy Institute Freiberg, is demonstrating that existing gas distribution networks can indeed transport hydrogen.

Westnetz has dedicated a medium-pressure natural gas pipeline for this purpose, separating it from the main distribution network and connecting it to a hydrogen storage facility. This facility holds certified green hydrogen of quality 3.0, with a purity of 99.9% and a maximum storage pressure of 40 bar. The company operates the first hydrogen distribution network in Germany in Holzwickede.

Weishaupt's Thermo Condens boilers, approved for operation with 100% hydrogen, are being used by three Westnetz customers. These boilers come in power classes of 15, 25, and 32 kilowatts, with the customers using capacities of 15, 32, and 32 kilowatts respectively. The operational processes can be easily switched to the new gas, with the plant operation planned until the end of 2026.

The H2HoWi project, involving Westnetz and Weishaupt, is successfully testing the feasibility of hydrogen transport in existing gas networks. Three companies in Holzwickede are now heating their premises using climate-neutral hydrogen, marking a significant step towards a greener future.
