Honda's 0 Series Prototype: Behind-the-Wheel Experience and Fresh Engineering Insights
Honda has taken a significant step forward in automotive technology, showcasing its latest powertrain innovation in the 2024 Accord Saloon prototype. The new powertrain was tested at Honda's R&D base in Tochigi, Japan, offering a sneak peek at the technology before its official release.
The new powertrain, as indicated by the accompanying engineer, is well-sorted and promises a choice between a responsive and efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a more powerful and smooth 204-horsepower hybrid system. These power options aim to provide a refined driving experience with modern technological enhancements.
During the test, the new powertrain was sampled in a 2024 Accord Saloon prototype, which was referred to as a "mule" vehicle. The test track included a straight, a tight chicane, and a short, winding hill section. The new powertrain offers instant torque when coming out of corners and provides quick and quiet acceleration.
The hybrid powertrain combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, delivering a combined output of 204 horsepower. This hybrid setup is available on the Sport, EX-L, Sport-L, and Touring models, highlighting its prominence in the lineup. The non-hybrid option, powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, produces 192 horsepower and is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The powertrain emphasizes smoothness, quiet operation, and composed handling with precise steering and well-controlled body motions, contributing to a confident and compliant ride experience. Advanced features supporting the powertrain, such as Hill Start Assist, Remote Engine Start, and Dual-Pinion, Variable-Ratio Electric Power Steering (EPS), enhance drivability and convenience.
Fuel economy is also notable, with the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine delivering around 29 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, representing a good blend of performance and efficiency.
While the test did not provide a chance to gain true driving impressions of the new powertrain, it did offer a promising glimpse into Honda's latest technological advancements. The new powertrain will be experienced in full when the production version of the 0 Series Saloon goes on sale. Until then, Honda enthusiasts can look forward to a more powerful, efficient, and refined driving experience.
The new powertrain, available in the 2024 Accord Saloon prototype, combines technology with both a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 204-horsepower hybrid system, drawing from advancements in the automotive industry. This fusion of finance and transportation technology, with options in both hybrid and non-hybrid powertrains, aims to elevate the driving experience with modern enhancements in the industry.
