Xiaomi's First Electric SUV, the YU7, Faces Delay Due to Overwhelming Demand

Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, has started deliveries of its first electric SUV, the YU7, across 58 cities in China. However, the demand for the vehicle has surpassed production capacity, causing delivery wait times to extend to around 59 to 62 weeks (approximately 14 months) as of mid-2025.

The YU7 was officially launched on June 26 and created a stir, with over 240,000 orders being placed within the first 18 hours of its sale. This influx of orders has left Xiaomi facing unprecedented factory capacity constraints.

To address these constraints, Xiaomi initiated a large-scale recruitment drive for a second-phase factory starting in July 2025, aiming to increase production capacity in the near term. Despite Xiaomi delivering a record over 30,000 electric vehicles in July 2025, largely driven by the YU7's popularity, the company is still struggling to ramp up production fast enough to meet this demand.

As a result, consumers who order the YU7 now can expect delivery only in the second half of 2026. Xiaomi has also implemented purchase agreement terms allowing them to manage payment timing based on production and sales considerations, likely related to these capacity and delivery uncertainties.

Xiaomi's X Twitter profile showcases the first SU7 Ultra registered in Europe, indicating the company's aim to explore overseas markets from 2027. The YU7 is a competitor to the Tesla Model Y, and it remains to be seen how Xiaomi will navigate the global market with its electric SUV.

In summary, Xiaomi has begun YU7 deliveries but faces severe factory capacity constraints, resulting in wait times exceeding a year, with active efforts underway to expand production through a new factory phase. Consumers who are interested in the YU7 are advised to check Xiaomi's X Twitter profile's mobile app for the latest delivery updates.
