Cléon Factory: A Pioneer in Engine Production and Electrification
The Cléon factory, located in France, has made a significant mark in the automotive industry, particularly in engine production and electrification. The factory, a long-standing player in the industry, produced the 5A engine for Renault and its partners, a first of its kind engine devoid of rare earths.
In April 2015, the factory embarked on an important milestone, focusing on electrification and conducting the first studies on the ZOE motor. This move signified the factory's commitment to a greener future.
The introduction of the 6A engine, fitted to the Megane E-Tech and All-new Scenic E-Tech electric, represents a significant leap forward. With 30% more power in a motor 30% more compact, the 6A engine is a testament to the factory's innovative prowess. The 6A engine also boasts an impressive 1,800 inspection points.
Patrice Duhaut, Process Expert Leader, attributes the factory's strength to the expertise accumulated over decades producing engines and gearboxes. This wealth of knowledge is evident in the factory's daily operations, where 50 families of parts are machined each day, including parts for electric motors.
The factory's commitment to technological advancement is evident in the integration of robotics, human/machine interfaces, and modernized foundry work. With 648 robots, including 89 collaborative robots, forming part of the manufacturing process, the factory is truly a modern marvel.
To further drive technological progress, the Cléon factory opened an electric university to continue evolving and remain at the cutting-edge of technological progress. Over 3,000 people are currently employed in the Cléon workshops, contributing to the success of this radical transformation.
In 2017, a division was set up at Cléon to focus specifically on the electric process, with over 40 experts now part of the team. Employees at the factory also receive training at the E-Mobility Industry Academy.
The factory's contribution to technological advancement is evident in its production figures. To date, the workshop has manufactured 100 million engines and gear boxes, including 14,512,000 C-type engines, 14,520,000 F-type engines, and 21,139,294 J-type gearboxes.
The factory's efficiency is also evident in the 250 automated guided vehicles (AGV) that travel along the production lines every day to replenish workstations. The last model car equipped with the "6A engine" manufactured at the Cléon factory was the Renault 6, a testament to the factory's ability to adapt and innovate with the times.
