Gamescom 2022 Set to Break Records in Cologne, Germany

Next week, the gaming world will gather in Cologne, Germany, for the highly anticipated Gamescom 2022. This year's event, themed "Games - Perfect Entertainment", promises to be a significant one, with an estimated 370,000 visitors and over 1,500 exhibitors from 72 countries.

The growth in attendance and exhibitors is consistent with the event's trajectory before the pandemic. According to historical data, Gamescom consistently increased attendance from 2017 onwards, reaching around 355,000 visitors in 2017. By 2019, attendance approached 370,000. The event's 2025 edition featured a record 1,500 exhibitors, and extrapolating backward, the 2022 exhibitor count is likely around 1,150, considering steady growth in exhibitors leading to 2025's record.

The gaming industry has experienced a 4% growth in the first half of the year, amounting to around 4.6 billion euros. This growth is largely due to strong demand for consoles, with the Nintendo Switch 2 launch significantly contributing to the increase in hardware sales, which saw a 17% increase to 1.2 billion euros.

The event, scheduled for Thursday to Sunday, will open to the general public for four days, following an opening show on Tuesday evening and a trade visitor day on Wednesday. Many gaming fans use this event to try out new games, as no major blockbuster games were released in the first half of the year, contributing to the decrease in computer and video game sales, which decreased by 2% to 2.7 billion euros.

Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse, stated that Gamescom has reached a new high in variety. The exhibition area will increase by 3,000 square meters to a record 233,000 square meters. Online gaming services saw a slight increase in the first half of the year.

The gaming business in Germany is overseen by the gaming industry association, with Felix Falk serving as the managing director. This association predicts an increase in sales due to the release of "big titles" in the coming months.

In summary, Gamescom 2022 is poised to break records, with an estimated 370,000 visitors, over 1,500 exhibitors, and a record exhibition area of 233,000 square meters. The event, themed "Games - Perfect Entertainment", will take place next week in Cologne, Germany.
