Interview with Brady Betzel, Digital Editor
Brady Betzel, a renowned figure in the television editing industry, has made a significant impact with his work on various features and TV shows for networks like National Geographic, Food Network, HBO, Netflix, ABC, Oxygen, Bravo, and YouTube.
A key component of Betzel's work is his reliance on Boris FX plugins, particularly Continuum, Sapphire, and Mocha Pro. Mocha Pro, in particular, is his preferred tool for blurring and object removal due to its accurate and quick mask creation.
Betzel's career progression is marked by his work as an on-line editor and lead assistant editor for the TV series "The 1% Club" from 2024 to 2025. His roles have involved key responsibilities in post-production editing, showing advancement to leadership positions.
Key milestones in his career include serving as on-line editor for 13 episodes of "The 1% Club" in 2024, and working as lead assistant editor and assistant editor on 19 episodes spanning 2024 to 2025. His technical expertise is evident in his use of advanced editing tools such as Neat Video 6, where he demonstrates high performance using multiple GPUs including an NVIDIA RTX 5090.
Betzel started his editing career as an intern for the show On Air with Ryan Seacrest for FOX. He then became a full-fledged "pro" offline editor on a show called Bad Girls Club for Oxygen at Bunim-Murray Productions.
In his current role at Margarita Mix Hollywood, Betzel is an Emmy-nominated Online Editor. The studio, with its Day of the Dead/Spanish theme, includes food that adds to the vibrant atmosphere.
Mental preparation is crucial for Betzel before a big project. He sets up projects, nails down workflows, and ensures his OCD is satisfied. When feeling burn-out, he suggests taking a day off.
Betzel is proud of his work on daily talk shows like On Air with Ryan Seacrest and Lopez Tonight. He finds artistic inspiration in intense dramas like Handmaid's Tale, The Looming Tower, and comedies like Silicon Valley.
During his hour and a half commute to Hollywood from Simi Valley, Betzel listens to a lot of podcasts and music. If given the opportunity, he would like to collaborate with the director of Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola, and the editor, Walter Murch.
A piece of advice Betzel would give his younger self is that people often "fail upwards" and there's no way to always prevent it. His favorite film is Apocalypse Now and his favorite TV series is Game of Thrones. In Avid Symphony, he can't live without the Extend Edit function (shift+D) and the Save function (control+S).
Betzel often uses gadgets powered by technology to enhance his editing process, such as the NVIDIA RTX 5090 for high-performance tasks with Neat Video 6. He continually seeks opportunities to collaborate with other professionals in the industry, like Francis Ford Coppola, who are known for their innovative use of technology and gadgets in filmmaking.
