The Lincoln Zephyr, a new sedan designed exclusively for the Chinese car market, is set to make its debut in 2022. This China-only model, being manufactured by the Changan-Ford joint venture, shares many similarities with the Ford Mondeo in terms of body design and size. However, it's clear that Lincoln has something unique in store for the Zephyr.
Contrary to initial speculations, the production version of the Lincoln Zephyr is not expected to be an electric vehicle (EV). Instead, it seems that Lincoln is positioning the Zephyr as a model specifically tailored for the Chinese market, with a focus on electrification in line with the global emphasis on EVs by both Lincoln and Ford.
The 2026 Lincoln Zephyr Black Label is described as having a "whisper-quiet electric powertrain" and a futuristic design that emphasizes its electric nature, indicating a shift towards electrification for the Zephyr[3]. However, the powertrains for the China-spec Zephyr are yet to be confirmed. The China-spec Mondeo, on the other hand, is available with 1.5 turbo, 2.0 turbo, and 2.0 PHEV power trains.
The Lincoln Zephyr was previewed by the Lincoln Zephyr Reflection concept car, and it appears that the production model will retain the concept's futuristic design. The car was largely designed and developed in China, with the aim of blending Chinese design and technology with American luxury.
It's worth noting that the Zephyr may not feature camera mirrors, as they are not yet allowed in China. Instead, the production version of the Lincoln Zephyr will have traditional mirrors.
The Lincoln Zephyr is aimed at a more youthful customer segment, and its unveiling is eagerly anticipated. The production version of the Lincoln Zephyr may be unveiled on the Guangzhou Auto Show in November, or on the Beijing Auto Show next April.
