Apple's CarPlay Overhaul: What's Brewing with iOS 26 and Beyond

iOS 26 May Introduce Two CarPlay Enhancements, Yet Anticipation Builds for CarPlay Ultra

Round up, bid adieu to the old, and embrace the new - that's the vibe we're getting from Apple as they gear up for their WWDC event next week. And let's not forget the buzz about the upgraded iOS release, set to revolutionize CarPlay with an arsenal of in-car changes.

For the past few years, Apple has been a bit tardy with CarPlay updates, only adding an extra row of icons for those lucky enough to own massive infotainment displays. But things are changing, and it seems Apple has been focused on enhancing the CarPlay experience through the launch of CarPlay Ultra by Aston Martin.

But Monday, June 9, might just be a turning point for us everyday drivers, with rumors suggesting that Apple is set to refresh the look of its operating system across devices (including CarPlay) with iOS 26.

Details on the new UI are scarce, but MacRumors claims the design will shine brighter, drawing inspiration from Vision OS, and will even introduce a Large Text option and expanded Sound Recognition for CarPlay.

Remember Sound Recognition? It debuted with iOS 18 last year, gracefully alerting deaf or hard-of-hearing passengers and drivers to the sounds of sirens, horns, and babies crying within the vehicle.

A New Era for CarPlay

Sure, a new design and a couple of accessibility features might just be the beginning of an even bigger update. But it's hard to envision CarPlay getting any better than with the rollout of CarPlay Ultra.

CarPlay Ultra takes the user experience to the next level by offering control over key car functions directly from the CarPlay ecosystem, eliminating the need to leave it. Porsche tried their hand at a CarPlay Ultra-lite with their new Macan, but Aston Martin is the first to surrender full control of its digital displays, both for the driver and passenger.

Purists might argue that the loss of beautiful hand-finished analogue binnacles is a blow to the automotive charm, but the simplicity and user-friendliness of CarPlay Ultra's interface is unparalleled. To see the mapping application of your choice displayed in high resolution before the driver's eyes, paired with the ability to tweak vehicle safety settings within CarPlay? That's the future we're talking about here.

Manufacturers like Hyundai, Kia, Renault, Porsche, and Ford are all in line to receive CarPlay Ultra, but let's hope Apple unveils some tantalizing CarPlay user-experience features to keep us excited until we can all afford a new, fancy car. Join us for our full WWDC 2025 coverage next week!

Technology is about to redefine car ownership with Apple's CarPlay Ultra, as it promises to offer complete control over key vehicle functions directly from the CarPlay ecosystem, blurring the lines between computing and driving. This advancement, set to be rolled out in partnership with manufacturers like Hyundai, Kia, Renault, Porsche, and Ford, will soon turn driving into an entirely new experience.

Enhancing this innovative leap, iOS 26 promises to breathe fresh life into the CarPlay interface with a design inspired by Vision OS and additional accessibility features, such as a Large Text option and expanded Sound Recognition for passenger safety. With these updates on the horizon, the future of in-car technology is undoubtedly approaching faster than we think.
