Apple Unveils iOS 26 Update with New Games and Preview Apps

Apple has announced the release of iOS 26, an update that brings significant changes to the gaming and document management experiences on iPhones and iPads. The highlight of this update is the introduction of two new apps: the Games app and the Preview app.

The Games app is a centralised hub for all gaming-related content on iOS devices. It features a Home tab for quick access to favourite games and highlights, an Arcade tab showcasing the latest Apple Arcade selections, a Library tab displaying all installed games with progress and achievements, and a Play Together feature linked with Game Center for tracking friends’ scores, participating in challenges, and multiplayer gameplay. The app also offers personalized gaming recommendations based on user habits.

The Preview app, previously only available on macOS, is now making its way to iOS devices. This app serves as a dedicated space for viewing PDFs and images. It allows users to open, view, create, and annotate PDFs, perform image editing tasks such as cropping, resizing, rotating, flipping, and annotating, scan documents using the camera, fill out PDF forms directly, create new files from scratch or based on copied content, and access documents synced via iCloud for seamless editing on the go.

The iOS 26 update is expected to be released alongside the iPhone 17 in early September, and it's poised to enhance the gaming and Preview experiences on iPhones and iPads. By default, the iOS device's Files app will launch PDFs and images inside Preview for files saved in iCloud. This update reduces the need to switch between multiple apps for managing documents and images, although it works best with iCloud-stored files, which can be a limitation for locally stored documents.

The Games app centralises all gaming-related content on iOS devices, acting like a dedicated game console dashboard on mobile devices. The Preview app, on the other hand, brings the Mac Preview app’s core functions to iPhone and iPad, offering a central point of control for managing documents and images.

With the iOS 26 update, Apple aims to streamline the user experience by offering dedicated apps for gaming and document management, making it easier for users to navigate and manage their content on their iOS devices.
