Joby Aviation's eVTOL Aircraft Takes Flight at Expo 2025 Osaka
Joby Aviation has marked a significant milestone in electric aviation with the first demonstration flight of its eVTOL aircraft at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai in Japan. The flight, conducted in partnership with ANA, showcased the potential of air taxis and marked a first for a world expo.
The Joby S4 aircraft successfully performed a vertical takeoff, transitioned to wingborne flight, and landed vertically. Painted in an ANA livery, the aircraft is set to complete more than 20 flights over a 13-day period. Once certified, the S4 can carry a pilot and up to four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph (320km/h).
JoeBen Bevirt, CEO and founder of Joby, praised Japan's potential in leading air taxi technology. Joby Aviation and ANA plan to build a national air taxi ecosystem starting in Tokyo, deploying more than 100 Joby aircraft. The development will include a network of vertiports, pilot training programs, and aircraft maintenance support. Public demonstration flights serve as a way to gather data on airspace integration and engage communities.

With ANA's support, the companies aim to create a national air taxi ecosystem in Japan, starting in Tokyo.
