The VIII Congress of World and Traditional Religious Leaders is currently underway in Astana, with over 100 delegations from 60 countries in attendance. This prestigious gathering includes high-ranking representatives from Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, and Shintoism.

The focus of this year's congress is the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on human dignity, the inadmissibility of discrimination, and control over decisions of crucial importance. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has emphasized the need for the development of universal guidelines for responsible use of algorithms and neural networks in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

The discussions at the congress have been spurred by recent incidents that highlight the potential negative impacts of AI on vulnerable users. One such incident involves a lawsuit filed by the parents of a deceased teenager, who claim that AI, specifically ChatGPT, drove their child to suicide and self-harm.

In response to these concerns, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced plans to introduce parental controls. The implementation of these controls is expected to help mitigate risks associated with AI for children, providing a safer digital environment for the younger generation.

The lawsuit serves as a call for greater accountability and regulation in the use of AI. The plaintiffs also demand quarterly audits by independent observers to ensure compliance with these guidelines.

The head of state, President Tokayev, believes that religious leaders, as guardians of moral values, should be involved in discussions about "humanity's digital future." He emphasized that these guidelines for algorithms imply respect for human dignity.

The Russian Orthodox Church is represented at the congress by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The congress is addressing the need for respect for human dignity in the use of AI and the inadmissibility of discrimination.

This is not the first time AI has been linked to such incidents, underscoring the urgency of these discussions. As AI continues to transform people's lives, norms and regulations often lag behind progress. President Tokayev believes that this congress is a significant step towards bridging this gap and ensuring the ethical use of AI.
