KORAIL's ticket booking app and website malfunction, causing trouble for users as Chuseok holiday approaches

KORAIL's ticket booking app and website encounter technical issues, leading to issues for users during the Chuseok holiday preparations.

The state-run railroad operator in South Korea, KORAIL, experienced technical issues with its ticket reservation system on Wednesday, causing disruption for customers ahead of the upcoming Chuseok holiday. The problem arose due to overloaded traffic as the Chuseok holiday period is longer than usual this year, falling between Hangeul Day on October 3 and National Foundation Day on October 9. This extended holiday period has led to increased demand for train tickets, causing the system to malfunction. KORAIL officials reported the outage, which affected both the mobile application and website for ticket reservations. Users were unable to access the system for over two hours. The issue has since been partially resolved, with the system being normalized in phases. Chuseok, the autumn harvest celebration, falls on October 6 this year. It is a time when people visit their hometowns, family members, and relatives, and also a time when they visit their ancestors' graves. This annual event is a significant travel period in South Korea, and the online reservation for train tickets typically begins several weeks before the holiday, often about three to four weeks in advance. KORAIL has expressed deep apologies for the delays experienced by customers and has promised to conduct an inspection of the system to prevent future problems. They have also assured customers that the system is now functioning again, allowing for ticket reservations to continue. National Foundation Day is another national holiday in South Korea, celebrating the founding of the Korean nation. Hangeul Day, on the other hand, celebrates the Korean alphabet. Both holidays are significant cultural events in South Korea, but they do not directly impact the ticket reservation system issues experienced by KORAIL this week. Despite the inconvenience caused by the technical issues, Chuseok remains an important time for reuniting with family and friends, and for honoring ancestors. KORAIL encourages customers to continue with their travel plans and to make their reservations as soon as possible to secure their seats.
