THW Conducts Major Exercise in North Rhine-Westphalia
The Technical Relief Agency (THW) in North Rhine-Westphalia recently organised a significant exercise over the weekends of September 3-5, 2025. The event, named "FÜLEX2025", involved various specialized groups (Fachgruppen) from the THW, focusing on infrastructure, drinking water supply, search and rescue, shoring, operational site security, bridge construction, water hazards and flooding, electrical supply, clearing, aerial reconnaissance, general rescue, and emergency supply and repair.
More than 1,000 helpers participated in the exercise, demonstrating their capabilities in various scenarios involving the rescue and recovery of people, animals, and property. The exercise took place in several locations, including Aachen, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Cologne, Mönchengladbach, and their surrounding areas.
One of the key scenarios trained during the exercise was the restoration of energy supply in case of extensive power outages. More than half of the approximately 900 deployment forces practiced on or near the Rhine. The "Power Supply" specialist group ensured the power supply for the deployed pumps, while the logistics units ensured the well-being of the participants, preparing meals, managing the supply of consumables, and repairing defective equipment over the weekend.
In the event of major damage events such as flood disasters, the "Unmanned Aerial Systems" team practiced creating aerial images with drones. The specialists of the "Mobile Flood Level" team set up several flood measuring points.
The forces of the "Clearing" specialist group demonstrated their skills in dyke construction. The "Water Damage/Pumps" specialist groups had to master the failure of pumps in a wastewater treatment plant and installed pumps with a total capacity of 45,000 liters per minute.
An evacuation exercise was conducted in Düsseldorf Rhine harbor, where ten boats and two working platforms were deployed. The generalists of the "Rescue" and "Emergency Supply and Emergency Repair" groups took the lead in the upcoming exercises.
State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dr. Daniela Lesmeister, praised the commitment of the deployment forces. Nicolas Hefner, THW State Representative for NRW, summarized that the deployment forces demonstrated that their knowledge is up-to-date.
