Majority Prefer Deciding Own Tip Amount, Survey Finds
A survey has revealed that a majority of people prefer to decide their own tip amount, rather than having it pre-set or calculated automatically by a tip calculator. Meanwhile, industry experts share differing views on the best way to handle tips at payment terminals.
A study by Bank Cler found that 69% of people prefer using cash for tipping, rather than credit cards. This preference might be due to the control it gives over the tip amount. Supporting this, 41% of respondents expressed a dislike for setting their tip as a percentage of the total price, preferring to decide the amount themselves.
Raoul Corciulo of Vendomat argues that customers appreciate having percentage tip options on cash registers. However, this contradicts the findings of a separate study which suggests that most people dislike pre-set tip amounts on payment terminals.
The debate on the best way to handle tips at payment terminals continues. While some prefer the control of deciding the tip amount themselves, others appreciate the convenience of percentage options. Despite these differing views, one thing is clear: encouraging or directly soliciting tips can decrease customer appreciation for tipping.
