Mazda unveils design of new CX-20 model
Mazda is gearing up for the launch of its next SUV, the CX-5, but the spotlight is also on a new addition to its lineup - the CX-20. The CX-20 is expected to compete in the compact SUV segment, taking on vehicles like the Toyota Yaris Cross, Chery Tiggo 4, and MG ZS.
Dom Tripolone, news editor, reports that Mazda is developing an in-house hybrid system to power the CX-20. However, due to size constraints, the CX-20 will not use the same hybrid setup as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Instead, it may employ a unique rotary hybrid setup, rumoured to use a rotary engine as a generator to charge a battery that powers electric motors, making it a range-extender hybrid.
While the focus seems to be on larger SUVs and electrified vehicles, Mazda is not abandoning its smaller cars and SUVs. The Mazda 2 and CX-3 are expected to continue in the lineup. In fact, Mazda is planning to launch a new version of its small SUV, currently known as the CX-3, in late 2026.
The new CX-20 is expected to be named as such instead of CX-3. It will continue to be built in Thailand, and there is interest in bringing the CX-20 to regions like Australia, with Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, expressing his enthusiasm for the new model.
Mazda is also developing a business case for the EZ-60, suggesting that the Japanese automaker is exploring various avenues in the electric vehicle space. The launch of the CX-20 may take time due to limited resources, but it's clear that Mazda is committed to delivering innovative, consumer-focused vehicles.
