Mercedes-Benz & Apptronik Unveil Apollo Humanoid Robots for Manufacturing
Mercedes-Benz and Apptronik have teamed up to introduce humanoid robots, named Apollo, into the carmaker's manufacturing facilities. These robots, standing around 5 foot 8 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, can lift objects up to 55 pounds and work alongside humans for up to four hours on a single charge.
Apollo's capabilities address labor shortages by tackling less desirable tasks, such as physically demanding, repetitive, or hazardous jobs. Mercedes-Benz plans to automate low-skill, manual labor using these robots, starting at its Digital Factory Campus in Berlin and production plants.
Apptronik, founded in 2016 and spun out of the University of Texas at Austin's Human Centered Robotics Lab, has developed Apollo based on its experience building over 10 previous robots, including the Valkyrie robot for NASA. The robots will be studied for potential use cases in logistics, such as delivering parts to assembly line workers.
Apollo robots, capable of operating independently and collaborating with humans, are set to revolutionize Mercedes-Benz's manufacturing processes. By automating challenging tasks, they aim to improve efficiency, reduce worker strain, and explore new possibilities in logistics.
