Microsoft Copilot might return your gaze, yet the question remains: who prompted this reciprocal observation?

Microsoft's AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, envisions a future where digital assistants, such as the Microsoft Copilot AI, become more than just tools—they become digital companions with a permanent identity, presence, and even a "room" they live in.

During an appearance on The Colin & Samir Show, Suleyman expressed his ambition for Copilot to create a quieter, cleaner, and more personalized working environment that feels owned and alive over time. He also imagines Copilot collaborating with popular creators, potentially competing with platforms like YouTube, showcasing his vision for this AI friend to be deeply integrated into daily digital life and content experiences.

The latest step towards this vision is the Copilot Appearance feature, a new development in the personification of digital assistants. This feature displays a virtual face expressing real-time emotions during conversation, enhancing the voice experience of the AI tool. Users can enable or disable Copilot Appearance through the Voice settings of Copilot.

However, the idea of Copilot as a "real friend" has been met with mixed reactions. Respondents in an anecdotal survey found Suleyman's quotes describing Copilot in such terms to be strange. None of the respondents expressed a desire for an AI assistant to be their "real friend."

The Copilot Appearance feature is currently in its early stages and is available for testing to a subset of users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. It remains to be seen how the wider population will respond to this evolution of digital assistants.

It's worth noting that this is not the first time Microsoft has experimented with personifying digital assistants. Microsoft's Clippy, an earlier digital assistant with an avatar, was first launched in 1995.

As Copilot Appearance continues to develop, it will be interesting to observe how users adapt to this new way of interacting with digital assistants and whether the vision of AI as a "real friend" becomes more widely accepted.
