Microsoft Secretly Acknowledges Discontinuation of a Windows 11 Edition

Microsoft has announced that it will be phasing out Windows 11 SE, its education-focused operating system, in the coming months. The company will end all support for the OS, including software updates, security patches, and technical assistance, in October 2026.

Windows 11 SE, first released in 2021, was designed to be an affordable alternative to Google Chromebooks. However, it failed to gain significant traction, leading to Microsoft's decision to discontinue it.

After October 2026, Windows 11 SE devices will continue to function but will lack ongoing security and system updates. The current version of Windows 11 SE, 24H2, will not be updated to the upcoming 25H2 update, which will work on other Windows 11 machines.

For current Windows 11 SE users, Microsoft recommends transitioning to devices that run standard editions of Windows 11 to ensure continued support and security. These standard editions provide full Windows functionality and ongoing updates.

The Surface Laptop SE, Microsoft's only hardware option for Windows 11 SE, sold for $249 in 2021. Although the Surface Laptop SE will no longer be supported by Windows 11 SE, it is still a Windows 11 device and may be upgraded to a different edition of Windows 11.

The decline in Chromebook sales may have influenced Microsoft's decision to phase out Windows 11 SE and focus on Windows 11 upgrades. Windows 11 SE comes with Microsoft Office 365 preinstalled and was also available on laptops from other manufacturers.

In a statement, Microsoft claimed that the latest update for Windows 11 is the most reliable ever. However, this claim is not directly related to Windows 11 SE. Users of Windows 11 SE devices should consider transitioning to a device that supports another edition of Windows 11 for continued support and security.
