Microsoft's Office products continue to be a cash cow, with revenue from legacy tools funding the tech giant's AI initiatives. The company's total revenue surged 18% from Q4 2024 to Q4 2025, driven by growth in both productivity tools and AI technologies.

Office products, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook, remain recession-resistant and have predictable revenue streams due to the subscription model. In fiscal year 2024, these products generated $54.9 billion, accounting for 22% of Microsoft's total revenue. By January 2024, Office 365 had reached 400 million paid seats, demonstrating their ongoing popularity and growth. Despite the success of its legacy tools, Microsoft is not resting on its laurels. It is actively playing catch-up in the generative AI landscape through strategic partnerships and in-house development.

Microsoft's Azure, the company's cloud computing platform, has also seen significant growth. In Q1 2025, Azure's income reached $75 billion, marking a 34% increase from the previous year. Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, highlighted this achievement in the company's report. Microsoft's stable productivity tools and innovative AI technologies, such as the agent Copilot, have positioned it as a top competitor in the AI landscape.

Microsoft's Office products continue to be a reliable source of revenue, funding the company's AI initiatives and driving its growth. With Azure's strong performance and continued investment in AI technologies, Microsoft remains a formidable competitor in the AI space.
