Moldova's Maia Sandu and PAS Secure Landslide Victory in Parliamentary Elections
Moldova's President Maia Sandu and her Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) have secured a significant victory in the recent parliamentary elections, winning 50.2% of the vote and 55 seats. This result, though a loss of eight seats from the previous election, underscores the country's resilience and independence from Russia news.
The election highlighted Moldova's fragility and resilience. Despite Russia's attempts to sway public opinion, Moldova's society is not entirely captive to Kremlin narratives. Sandu's victory demonstrates that voters are not swayed by pro-Russian sentiments. The PAS party's win, despite Ilan Șor's 'Victory/Pobeda' bloc opposition, shows that Moldovans are looking towards the West for support.
Moldova is actively reducing its dependence on Russian gas and improving its institutional resilience with Western assistance. This shift is evident in the exposure of Russia-linked networks during the election campaign and the country's move away from Russia's orbit. Even in Transnistria, where Russia maintains troops and ammunition, the PAS party managed to secure 30% of the vote.
Moldova's election results indicate a clear rejection of Russia's influence and a desire for closer ties with the West. While challenges persist, such as the presence of Russian troops in Transnistria, Moldova's determination to reduce dependence on Russian gas and strengthen its institutions signals a significant shift in the region's political landscape.
