Netflix Introduces Ad-Supported Subscription Option Due to Decreasing Subscriber Count

Netflix, the streaming giant, has announced a new tiered pricing strategy with the introduction of a cheaper plan that includes advertisements. The new plan, dubbed the "Standard with Ads" tier, will be priced at $7.99 per month in the U.S. as of 2025. This move is aimed at catering to price-sensitive customers and expanding its user base.

What's Included in the New Plan?

The Standard with Ads tier offers almost all movies and TV shows, with a few exceptions. This means that the content library remains largely accessible on this tier. Users can watch on two devices simultaneously, and streaming is available in Full HD, but not in 4K.

Netflix has introduced personalized ads and new ad formats, including interactive and pause ads, which are meant to be better targeted and more engaging for users. However, this may increase the amount of ad exposure compared to previous ad models.

Global Availability and User Base

The ad-supported tier is available in 12 countries, including the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea. As of now, the new plan has grown to about 94 million users globally.

The Future of Ad Revenue

While ad revenue is still a relatively small part of Netflix’s overall income, the company plans to double ad revenue by the end of 2025 by expanding and enhancing ad offerings. This move is in response to growing competition and a decline in subscriber numbers.

The Basic with Ads Plan

In addition to the Standard with Ads plan, Netflix will also introduce a new, cheaper plan called the "Basic with Ads" plan. This plan will be priced at $6.99 a month and will offer 15-30 second ads before and during shows and movies. High-definition video quality (up to 720p) will be available on one device at a time.

Balancing Affordability and Quality

The new plans aim to balance affordability with differentiated benefits on higher-priced tiers. For instance, Netflix will improve its Basic plan, offering HD quality instead of standard definition (480p), for the same price of $9.99 a month.

It's important to note that the Basic with Ads plan does not allow users to download content for offline use. Also, this new plan does not affect the existing Standard plan or Premium plan offered by Netflix.

Competition and Subscriber Loss

Netflix has been experiencing a decline in subscribers for the first time in over a decade this year. This decline can be attributed to growing competition from streaming services like Disney+, which gained 14.4 million customers in the quarter concluded June 30, 2022.

Reed Hastings, Netflix executive, acknowledged this decline and stated that the new plan was a response to growing competition. He also expressed opposition to advertising in the past but acknowledged the importance of consumer choice and lower prices for advertising-tolerant subscribers.

In May, Netflix imposed redundancies on over 150 workers, dozens of contractors, and part-time employees due to the decline in subscriber numbers and increased competition.

In summary, Netflix’s cheaper ad-supported plans offer a lower-cost, ad-driven option within its tiered pricing strategy. The new plans, priced at $7.99/month for the Standard with Ads and $6.99/month for the Basic with Ads, aim to balance affordability with differentiated benefits on higher-priced tiers. The Basic with Ads plan will be available in 12 countries, including the United States, starting November 3.

  1. By introducing a cheaper plan called the "Basic with Ads", Netflix aims to cater to a broader audience who seek affordability without compromising on entertainment, as this plan will offer a lower-cost, ad-driven option for streaming movies and TV shows.
  2. The growing competition in the entertainment industry, particularly from streaming services like Disney+, has led Netflix to focus on expanding its user base through the introduction of ad-supported plans, aiming to double ad revenue by the end of 2025.
  3. Despite the increase in advertising on its platforms, Netflix's new ad-supported plans, such as the "Standard with Ads" and "Basic with Ads", still offer a substantial library of movies and TV shows, ensuring that users have access to a wide range of content without breaking their net worth or general budget.
