Nintendo Unveils Switch 2's Arrival, Confirms New Direct Presentation Date
Nintendo's long-awaited reveal of the "successor to the Nintendo Switch" has finally arrived, and it's been named simply—the Nintendo Switch 2. While the teaser trailer and accompanying post didn't shed much light on the console's internal mechanics, it did give us our first look at the hardware, which aligns with the numerous leaks we've been seeing.
The Nintendo Switch 2 appears to share a striking resemblance to its predecessor, with a bulkier design and a slightly larger screen (roughly 25% larger) being its most notable features. The upgrades are minimal, opting to keep the core structure of the device similar to the original Switch. This is an odd departure for Nintendo, which has a history of drastically changing the form factor with each new generation.
However, with over 146 million units sold, it's clear that Nintendo doesn't want to stray too far from the winning formula. The name itself underscores this; it's not the "Super Nintendo Switch Plus", it's simply the Switch 2.
Nintendo won't be giving us any more details about the Switch 2 until April 2, when they plan to host a dedicated direct focusing on the console. After that, hands-on events will be held in various cities across different continents.
As for the specifications, the Switch 2 is rumored to boast an Arm Cortex-A78C with 8 cores, a 12-stream Nvidia T239 Ampere GPU, and 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM (with some units potentially sporting LPDDR5X). These enhancements should result in a significant boost in performance compared to the original Switch, though it still lags behind competitors such as the Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5.

The upcoming Switch 2 is also said to feature upscaling technologies, similar to NVIDIA's DLSS, to help enhance game performance, especially in handheld mode. Studio optimizations will play a crucial role in maximizing the hardware's potential, so we're eager to see how Nintendo utilizes these capabilities to deliver an incredible gaming experience.
So, what do we know so far? The Nintendo Switch 2 is real, it's called the Switch 2, and it looks like a slightly larger Switch. That's all we have for now, but we're excited to learn more in the coming weeks.
