Nio, a company specializing in battery swaps for electric vehicles, plans to expand into seven additional European markets
Nio Expands European Presence with Premium EV Brand, Firefly
Electric vehicle manufacturing giant Nio is aggressively expanding its presence in Europe, with the launch of its new premium compact EV brand, Firefly. The brand officially began deliveries on August 14, 2025, in Norway and the Netherlands.
Firefly targets the premium small car segment, competing with models like BMW Mini and Mercedes-Benz Smart. The vehicle boasts advanced safety features, such as nine airbags, and premium features like a 14-speaker audio system. It is not a budget-priced vehicle, with pricing starting around 279,900 NOK (~$27,200) in Norway and €29,900 (~$34,900) in the Netherlands.
Nio's European expansion involves cooperation with local distribution partners and includes cars from two distinct brands: Nio (premium smart EVs) and Firefly. The company has already set up shop in Denmark, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, Israel, and Azerbaijan.
In 2025, Firefly is entering or plans to enter multiple European countries: Norway, Netherlands (active deliveries started), Austria, Hungary (launches before end of 2025), and Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Denmark, Portugal, and Greece (mostly planned for late 2025 or 2026). This represents a significant increase from Nio’s previous European presence limited to Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden.
Complementing vehicle sales, Nio is aggressively rolling out battery swap stations in Europe (including France, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden), aiming for 1,000 stations globally by end of 2025. This move is aimed at enhancing the user experience and lowering barriers to EV adoption.
Nio’s stock has gained over 16% in the past year amid this global expansion. The Firefly brand has already delivered over 10,000 units globally as of late July 2025, less than 100 days after launch, reflecting strong initial market traction.
Thijs Meijling, head of NIO Europe Business, stated that Europe is a core pillar of Nio's global strategy and a region with tremendous potential for smart, user-centric mobility.
In addition to Firefly, the initial offerings in Europe will include the Nio EL6 SUV, EL8 luxury six-seat SUV, the ET5 mid-size sedan, and the ET5 Touring. Nio first announced its European expansion in the middle of 2021.
However, Nio's financial performance in the first quarter of 2025 was not as expected. The company reported a net loss of RMB 6.75 billion (around $A1.45 billion) in its unaudited first quarter financial report. Revenue was below analyst expectations and at the lower end of company guidance. The number of vehicles delivered in the first quarter was 42,094, a decrease from the 72,689 delivered in Q4. Revenue increased year-over-year but declined by nearly 40% on the previous quarter.
Despite the financial challenges, Nio plans to enter seven new markets in 2025 and 2026. The first battery swap station was installed in Europe by Nio in November of 2021. Joshua S. Hill, a Melbourne-based journalist, has been reporting on electric vehicles and clean technologies for Renew Economy and The Driven since 2012. It is worth noting that Mr. Hill's preferred mode of transport is his feet.
In conclusion, Nio’s Europe expansion reflects a strategic push into premium compact urban EVs with the Firefly brand supported by infrastructure investments, new market entries, and strong initial sales momentum. This move highlights Nio’s rapid international growth ambitions and focus on clean mobility.
Businesses in the finance sector are closely monitoring Nio's European expansion, as the electric vehicle manufacturer seeks to capitalize on the region's growing interest in technology and sustainable transportation. The launch of Nio's premium compact EV brand, Firefly, not only brings competition to established brands like BMW Mini and Mercedes-Benz Smart, but also signals a strategic shift in the industry towards user-centric mobility.
