NYC Extends Big Apple Connect: Free Internet & Cable for 3 More Years
New York City is extending its Big Apple Connect program, providing free internet and cable services to public housing residents for another three years. The initiative, launched in 2022, has already connected over 150,000 households, benefiting around 330,000 residents. This extension builds on other Adams administration broadband initiatives, including Liberty Link and a $2.4 million digital equity project.
Before Big Apple Connect, nearly 40% of public housing residents lacked broadband access. The program, supported by service providers Optimum and Spectrum, has significantly improved digital inclusion. The extension includes additional funding for digital literacy training, with a new initiative called 'digital literacy programming at libraries'. This includes an online digital literacy hub offering virtual training sessions, job search assistance, and other resources. The extended program will continue to bill service providers directly for enrolled residents.
With this extension, Big Apple Connect will continue to bridge the digital divide among public housing residents. The additional funding for digital literacy training ensures that residents not only have access to the internet but also the skills to use it effectively.
