Online vigilance essential for true independence as internet fraud and false information surge
Minister Warns Against Believing Viral Content, Emphasizes Wisdom at 'Jiwa Merdeka: Aspirasi Belia Madani'
Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications Minister and the Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, has urged the public, particularly the youth, to remain vigilant when using the Internet and social media. He made this statement during the 'Jiwa Merdeka: Aspirasi Belia Madani' program held in Buttower, Malaysia.
In his address, Fahmi Fadzil warned against believing viral content shared by influencers on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. He emphasized the importance of embracing wisdom in facing current challenges, including threats from scammers and slanderers. Fahmi Fadzil reiterated that not all information encountered online is true.
The program, organized by Penang J-KOM, brought together over 1,000 youths. It included national awareness segments, e-sports, and intellectual discussions. The highlight of the event was an e-sports championship with total prizes worth RM8,000, featuring competitions in e-football, PUBG, Mobile Legends, and Tekken.
A convoy ride featuring 200 motorcycles carrying the Jalur Gemilang was held, with youths participating from across the country. The convoy, 6.1 kilometers long, commenced at Petron Seberang Jaya and concluded at the official ceremony venue.
Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Datuk Ismail Yusop were also present at the event. Certificates and trophies were awarded in the sports, cultural, and entrepreneurship categories. Fahmi Fadzil presented medals in the leadership and volunteerism categories.
Fahmi Fadzil said that true independence is not merely celebrated symbolically on National Day and Malaysia Day, but must be embraced with wisdom. He stated that continuing to be "colonized" by scammers and slanderers negates the meaning of freedom.
The 'Jiwa Merdeka: Aspirasi Belia Madani' program was held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day 2025 celebrations. Fahmi Fadzil reminded the public, particularly the youth, not to be complacent with the rapid development of digital technology. He urged everyone to stay vigilant and make informed decisions online.
