Phoenix Open's Private Cellular Network a 'Game-Changer' in Zero-Waste Event
The Waste Management Phoenix Open, the world's largest zero-waste sporting event, has successfully deployed a private cellular network to tackle connectivity challenges. The network, a collaboration between Ericsson and Sparro (a WorldVue subsidiary), has significantly improved communications for the event's operations team.
Previously, public cellular networks and traditional Wi-Fi struggled to provide adequate coverage, reliability, and security for the Waste Management Phoenix Open's operations. To overcome this, four CBRS-based private cellular networks (PCNs) were strategically installed across the event grounds. These networks, supplemented by enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, enabled seamless, secure communications for WM executives, operations staff, and VIP areas using eSIMs on staff devices.
The deployment was a 'game-changer', with staff reporting no performance issues despite daily usage reaching 130GB. WM officials praised the private cellular network's performance, particularly in critical areas like the command center and Hole 16, where it significantly improved operational efficiency. Sparro also implemented IoT sensors and GPS tracking devices for golf carts through Verizon Connect, further enhancing operational efficiency and safety.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open, facing significant connectivity challenges due to high attendance, has found a solution in private cellular networks. The collaboration between Ericsson and Sparro has resulted in a reliable, secure, and efficient communication system, ensuring seamless operations throughout the event.
