Pixel 6a update targeting thermal management issues deemed necessary to install

In a recent announcement, Google has revealed that a subset of Pixel 6a devices have been identified as having a potential battery overheating risk. These devices, labelled as "Impacted Devices," will receive a mandatory software update to mitigate this issue.

Google has emphasised that not all Pixel 6a phones are impacted; the determination is based on internal assessments by the tech giant. The update, which reduces battery capacity and charging performance, will only activate after the phone's battery completes 400 charge cycles.

Starting July 8, 2025, all Pixel 6a models will receive the mandatory software update to Android 16. However, it's worth noting that only the Impacted Devices will receive the battery management features that reduce capacity and charging performance after 400 cycles.

Users can confirm whether their device is impacted by entering their IMEI on Google’s support page. This will help them determine their eligibility for the program and possible free battery replacement, cash payment, or hardware discount as compensation.

This update is part of Google's safety push to prevent overheating in Pixel 6a devices. The company aims to prevent "meltdown-level surprises" in these devices, ensuring the safety and reliability of its products.

It's important to note that if your Pixel 6a is not an "Impacted Device," the Android 16 update will not affect your battery or charging speeds.

This isn't the first time Google has taken such a step. Previously, the battery capacity of the Pixel 4a was reduced with a surprise update. The company insists that this update includes important battery management features designed to enhance the longevity and safety of its devices.

Google is offering free battery swaps or cash payouts as compensation for the battery limit on Pixel 6a devices. The battery limit will not take effect until the device has gone through 400 full charge cycles. Users will also receive a heads-up at 375 charge cycles before the battery limit kicks in.

In summary, Google has identified a subset of Pixel 6a devices as having a potential battery overheating risk. These devices, labelled as "Impacted Devices," will receive a software update that reduces battery capacity and charging performance after 400 charge cycles. Devices not identified as impacted will not have their battery management changed by this update.

Smartphone users with a Pixel 6a can check if their device is among the "Impacted Devices" through Google's support page, as these gadgets are the ones that will receive a mandatory software update designed to manage the battery for safety reasons, reducing the capacity and charging performance after 400 charge cycles.
