Proton, a company emphasizing privacy, introduces a personal Bitcoin wallet that doesn't require third-party custody.

Proton, the company behind popular privacy-focused apps like Proton Mail, Proton VPN, and Proton Drive, is venturing into a new realm with the launch of Proton Wallet. This self-custodial crypto wallet aims to make Bitcoin more accessible to non-crypto native users by integrating with Proton's existing ecosystem, providing a user-friendly, secure, and private wallet experience.

Empowering Users with Control and Security

Proton Wallet empowers users by granting them control of their private keys, ensuring that their assets are protected from unauthorized access. The wallet is designed to be self-custodial, meaning that users retain full control over their Bitcoin funds without relying on third-party custodians. This design enhances security and trust.

Simplifying Bitcoin Transactions

Proton Wallet aims to eliminate the complexities of using long cryptocurrency addresses when sending Bitcoin. Users can send and receive Bitcoin via their email addresses, as long as both parties have a Proton Wallet. This integration makes transactions as easy to use as popular payment platforms like PayPal.

Enhanced Security Features

In addition to being self-custodial, Proton Wallet incorporates a two-factor authentication process. This added layer of protection safeguards users’ funds, especially crucial for those less experienced with crypto security. Moreover, Proton Wallet's two-factor authentication process provides access to Proton Sentinel, a security feature that uses machine learning, AI, and human analysis to block unauthorized login attempts.

A Seamless User Experience

By leveraging Proton’s existing user base familiar with Proton Mail and Proton VPN, Proton Wallet creates synergy across services and simplifies onboarding for new users. The wallet likely emphasizes simple interfaces and workflows familiar to Proton users, reducing the learning curve for users unfamiliar with cryptocurrency wallets.

Transparency and Trust

Proton Wallet's open-source and audited code reassures users that the wallet is trustworthy and free of hidden risks. Thorough security audits ensure that the wallet is reliable and secure.

Encouraging Everyday Use

By making Bitcoin handling as easy and secure as using existing Proton services, Proton Wallet encourages adoption and everyday use. The underlying principle is that by making Bitcoin transactions as seamless, secure, and private as using Proton Mail or Proton VPN, it encourages non-crypto native users to embrace Bitcoin as a preferred payment method.

Global Access and On-Ramps

Proton Wallet's integrated crypto on-ramps enable users in more than 150 jurisdictions to buy Bitcoin. Early access versions of Proton Wallet have been launched for Web, iOS, and Android devices via the Proton Visionary plan.

Proton believes that by adopting means of payment not controlled by centralized institutions, they can insulate themselves from the risks posed by traditional finance. By making Bitcoin more accessible and easier to use, Proton Wallet is a step towards achieving this goal.
