In a significant development, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has announced several significant defense contracts, reinforcing its position as a key player in the defense electronics industry.

On July 28, 2025, the company secured a ₹2,000 crore contract from the Ministry of Defence for indigenous air defence fire control radars to be supplied to the Indian Army. These radars, designed and developed by BEL, incorporate AI-enabled capabilities to detect and track a range of aerial threats, including fighter jets, helicopters, and drones. The system has over 70% indigenous content and will be deployed with air defence regiments to enhance surveillance, targeting precision, and battlefield operations under varied conditions.

This deal aligns with the 'Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)' category, promoting Atmanirbhar Bharat, and involves Indian MSMEs in components and raw material supply.

BEL's involvement in advanced defense systems doesn't stop there. In May, the company signed a contract with the Indian Army Air Defence to manufacture the Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System (IDDIS). Although no explicit details about AI-based naval solutions or dedicated drone detection systems are mentioned in the latest tenders, BEL’s air defence radars encompass drone detection capabilities as part of tracking aerial threats.

Furthermore, BEL’s collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and defense projects, including radar fingerprinting and electronic warfare systems, suggest ongoing involvement in advanced sensing and electronic countermeasure technologies relevant to naval and aerial defense.

In June, BEL announced fresh orders worth ₹585 crore, including fire control and sighting systems for missiles, jammers, and communication equipment. The announced orders are for products and services related to the technology sectors of IDDIS, Software Defined Radios, Data Communication Units, AI-based naval solutions, simulators, and other services.

As of July 1, 2025, BEL's order book stood at ₹74,859 crore. The company's financial performance for the first quarter of FY26 is also noteworthy. Revenue from operations grew by 5.19% to ₹4,416.83 crore compared to the same period last year. Profit before tax (PBT) grew to ₹1,289.24 crore, and the profit after tax (PAT) rose by 24.87% to ₹969.13 crore.

The shares of the company closed at ₹389.35 on the BSE, down 1.48 per cent on the day of the announcement.

These contracts underscore BEL's commitment to indigenously designing, developing, and manufacturing defense electronics, contributing significantly to the country's defense capabilities and the 'Make in India' initiative.
