Rapid Growth in Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Demanded | Proposal for Fuel Tax Increase on Gas, Amidst Reach of Smart Meter Network at 10 Million
UK's Successful Shift Towards Renewable Energy in 2020
In 2020, the UK made significant strides in its renewable energy sector, with wind power growth and reduced demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic playing key roles in this success. Here's a look at some of the notable developments in this area.
Grid Stability Measures
On January 29, the National Grid ESO deployed its dynamic containment post-fault frequency response following the tripping of the IFA2 interconnector with France. This was a crucial moment, as it involved the participation of companies like Arenko and Octopus Energy, who automatically discharged their batteries to help stabilize the grid.
However, participation in the dynamic containment service remains undersubscribed, with only a steady increase since its launch in October last year.
Proposed Guidelines for Embedded Generation Disconnection
The National Grid ESO has opened a consultation to develop new guidelines for the disconnection of embedded generation. These guidelines aim to maintain system integrity by clearly defining electrical boundaries and operational conditions.
The electrical boundary for disconnection is typically at circuit breaker points or equivalent switchgear boundaries at the connection site. De-energisation of an Import Balancing Mechanism (BM) Unit leads directly to de-energisation of the associated Export BM Unit, affecting embedded generation connected behind that point.
Criticisms and Concerns
While these guidelines aim to improve system stability, they have raised concerns in the industry. Critics argue for transparency and communication gaps, market certainty, and investment risks, and the need to strike a balance between requiring disconnections for system security and maintaining support for decarbonization goals.
Government's Review of Energy Fairness and Affordability
In response to these concerns, the government's review of energy fairness and affordability, due to begin in April, is expected to address the subsidization of fossil fuel gas consumption and the penalty on electricity consumption.
Increasing EV Charging Points
The Policy Exchange thinktank has published a new policy briefing named Charging Up, which calls for an increase in the annual installation rate of electric vehicle (EV) charging points to 35,000 per year to meet the UK's commitment to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2030. According to the briefing, some parts of the UK may become "EV charging blackspots" if the increase in installation rate does not occur.
Smart Meters and Carbon Emissions
A significant milestone was reached with the installation of 10 million smart meters in Great Britain. These smart meters prevent the release of up to 275,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually.
Call for 'Sin Tax' on Gas Use
Octopus Energy has called for a 'sin tax' on gas use to drive down the costs of electricity compared to gas, which would propel the mass uptake of heat pumps by consumers. This call was made by Octopus Energy's director of external affairs, Clementine Cowton, at an online event organized by Policy Exchange.
The Need for More Renewables
According to new analysis published by Ember, electricity generated by renewables outpaced fossil fuel generation for the first time in 2020 in the UK, with 42% of electricity generated by renewables and 41% by fossil fuels. This underscores the need for continued investment in renewable energy sources.

In the domain of environmental science, the proposed guidelines for the disconnection of embedded generation aim to enhance system stability and maintain system integrity in the UK's renewable energy sector. On the other hand, finance is a crucial factor as Octopus Energy calls for a 'sin tax' on gas use to incentivize the adoption of heat pumps, a technology that would contribute to the UK's renewable energy goals and support decarbonization efforts.
