Pumped Up Pastiche: SPL Machine Head Delivers Excellent Tape Emulation

Hey there, fellow audiophiles! Over the last couple of decades, I've dabbled in numerous tape-emulation plugins. Some were outstanding; others, unconvincing. But the SPL Machine Head is a game-changer. Hear me out—it feels like a magic ride!

First off, the original SPL Machine Head algorithm was devised by SoundArt in the '90s, when plugin technology was still in its Stone Age. Enter the Ultimate era, powered by today's CPUs, and this brilliant revival is the project of SPL and SoundArt. This beauty lets you easily switch between the Original and Ultimate versions within the same dashboard. Take it from me—the Ultimate version's increased clarity and spatiality is a game-changer.

Cruise Control Deluxe

The biggest powerhouse in Machine Head's arsenal is the Drive knob, which you can crank up to saturate the virtual tape, increasing perceived volume. The Drive control ranges from -7 to +14 dB in 0.2 dB steps (Original) and 0.1 dB steps (Ultimate), allowing for fine-tuning.

As you saturate real magnetic tape, high frequencies get dampened. Machine Head lets you independently adjust Drive saturation and HF damping or boost the highs. The damping range is adjustable from -6 to +6 dB (in 1 dB steps with Original, 0.1 dB steps with Ultimate).

The Ultimate version offers an additional Low Freq Adjust knob to tweak bass frequencies, ranging from -6 to +6 dB (0.1 dB steps). Set it to 0 dB to neutralize the "head bump," a bass boost commonly found in analog tape machines.

The Original and Ultimate versions both offer a High Tape Speed switch, mimicking different speeds of the Lyrec TR-533. The 30 ips setting emulates real-world pre-emphasis, enhancing upper midrange and high frequencies and harmonics. But it doesn't reproduce the expected reduction in bass energy as seen in real tape machines. Savvy users can control the low end via the Low Freq Adjust knob instead.

Vertigo VSS-2 Plugin—Revisiting the Past with Style

Other goodies in Machine Head's feature set include input and output gain knobs, L/R LED ladders showcasing levels, and four buttons for storing presets. You can store presets using the menu bar, too, but judging by the alphabetized buttons, it's more practical to use those for recalling settings—switching between Original and Ultimate versions to hear the differences. Keep in mind: Effects like the exclusive Low Freq Adjust (Ultimate only) won't be audible when switching to the Original version.

Peak Performance

The plugin shows all your current settings, neatly arranged on the side of the customizable UI. There are a couple of things missing, however—namely Undo and Redo buttons, much to my dismay.

THE TAKEAWAY: "Affordably priced, SPL Machine Head takes tape emulation to previously unattained heights."

In my mixing sessions, I've almost always opted for the Ultimate version, thanks to its smooth, creamy texture that transforms tracks and entire mixes without ever sounding overly tubby. The Ultimate version incorporates the best of both worlds, adding warmth to your productions while preserving detail and providing a wider soundstage. Trust me when I say you'll be astounded by its superb sound quality.

If you've used other tape-emulation plugins in the past, some discerning listeners might have winced at the subtle loss of detail and clarity. Luckily, the SPL Machine Head in Ultimate mode steers clear of those issues, delivering striking results. This powerhouse plugin deserves its accolades for taking tape emulation to new heights—and at an affordable price, to boot! 😮🔥😎
