Xpeng Unveils AI-Powered G7 SUV: Challenging Tesla Model Y in China's EV Market

Xpeng, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has launched the G7 SUV, a technologically advanced vehicle designed to compete with the Tesla Model Y. The G7 boasts AI-driven smart features, ultra-fast charging, and a highly competitive range.

AI and Computing Power

The G7 is dubbed by Xpeng as the world's first "Super AI car." The Ultra variant debuts three custom Turing AI chips—two for smart driving and one for the cockpit—offering up to 2,250 TOPS (terra operations per second) of computing power. This is a massive leap compared to competitors. The Max variants are equipped with dual Nvidia Orin X chips, delivering 508 TOPS, while the Ultra variant uses three in-house Turing chips for advanced AI-driven features.

Performance and Charging

Powering the G7 is a rear-mounted single motor which produces 218 kW of power, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds (some sources cite 5.4 seconds for certain configurations). The G7 uses a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack (80 kWh) supporting a 5C ultra-fast charging rate, offering up to 702 km (CLTC) of range. The battery supports peak charging power of 451 kW, allowing a 10–80% top-up in just 12 minutes and adding up to 436 km of range in 10 minutes.

Interior and Cabin Tech

The interior of the G7 embraces minimalism, ditching most physical buttons and focusing on a clean, spacious layout. The vehicle is equipped with an 87-inch augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD), co-developed by Xpeng and Huawei, delivering detailed navigation and driver assistance overlays. A 15.6-inch central touchscreen runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 chipset, offering a smooth user experience and advanced multimedia features.

Exterior and Aerodynamics

The G7 adopts Xpeng’s second-generation “X Face” styling, with continuous LED running lights, a closed front for aerodynamics, and a distinctive “Star Ring” rear taillight design. The SUV achieves a drag coefficient of 0.238 Cd, slightly higher than the Tesla Model Y’s 0.230 Cd, but still class-leading for an SUV.

Pricing and Positioning

The G7 starts at 195,800 RMB in China, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y. Xpeng has launched a new model, the all-new tech-driven G7 SUV, with the family-aimed Xpeng G7 starting at $A50,200, making it above the G6 SUV in China.

With its AI-driven smart features, ultra-fast charging, and competitive range, the Xpeng G7 is poised to make a significant impact in China's EV market.
