Renewable Energy Revolution in Spain: Introducing the Most Sophisticated Two-Way Converter for Renewable Energy Sources and Data Centres

In a groundbreaking development, Galician company Norvento has launched the nXL converter, a game-changer in the renewable energy sector. This innovative device, unveiled on Monday in Lugo, Spain, is the most powerful and compact of its kind globally.

The nXL converter is designed to guarantee stable operation even in extreme climates, thanks to its IP65 certification throughout the system. With a density of 622 kVA/m3, it can offer up to 9 MVA in a standard 20-foot container, making it deployable in any scenario.

One of the key features of the nXL converter is its low harmonic content (THDi <1%) and a DC/AC ratio of up to 200% without modifications, ensuring seamless integration with various applications. These applications include solar plants, storage systems, green hydrogen electrolyzers, railway catenaries, and ports.

The nXL converter is bidirectional and can operate in both on-grid and off-grid modes, offering direct integration with batteries that cover demand peaks or possible interruptions. This feature is crucial for accelerating the integration of renewables, storage, and new industries like green hydrogen.

The nXL converter system is a key component for Norvento's flagship project, the neFO plant. Scheduled to begin operating on January 1, 2027, the neFO plant will be the first self-sufficient and emission-neutral factory in Spain, with an initial production capacity of 5 GW and plans to double that figure in just three years.

The Innovation Fund of the European Commission has recognised the relevance of the neFO project with a €27.5 million subsidy. This recognition underscores the project's significance in driving Spain's commitment to leading the way in critical technologies for decarbonization.

Norvento is not just manufacturing converters, but also driving a sustainable industrial ecosystem, creating jobs, and solidifying Galicia as a technological hub in Europe's energy transition. The company aspires to solidify its position as an international leader in the development of converters and systems for a 100% renewable future with the operation of neFO.

The neFO project is the only one led by a Spanish company in the category of manufacturing components for renewables and storage among the 77 selected projects. This achievement further cements Norvento's position as a trailblazer in the renewable energy sector.

With the operation of neFO set to begin in 2027, Norvento has its sights set on data centers as a priority market for the nXL converter. The company believes that the nXL converter will play a pivotal role in powering the growing demand for sustainable data centers worldwide.

In conclusion, the nXL converter represents a significant leap forward in the renewable energy sector, offering a compact, powerful, and versatile solution for the integration of renewables, storage, and new industries like green hydrogen. Norvento's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and industrial growth is evident in the development and deployment of the nXL converter and the neFO plant.
