Rheinmetall Wins €60M US EV Order for High-Voltage Switches
Rheinmetall, a German defence and automotive supplier, has secured a significant order worth around €60 million from a major US volume automaker for high-voltage switches. This deal comes as a boost to Rheinmetall's struggling automotive supply business.
The switches, designed and produced by Rheinmetall's Power Systems segment, are scalable and compatible with both 450V and 900V vehicle architectures. They are renowned for their low weight and low transition resistance, contributing to improved electric vehicle efficiency. The unnamed US automaker, a major player in the market, will utilise these switches to control the high-voltage systems in their electric vehicles, ensuring safe and reliable operation.
Rheinmetall's recent success in electric mobility, coupled with this substantial order, provides a glimmer of hope for the company's automotive supply business, which has been grappling with declining sales due to industry economic problems. Despite this, Rheinmetall's main focus remains on the arms boom, with the Power Systems segment, including the switches, no longer considered part of the company's core strategy.
The €60 million order from the major US automaker signals a vote of confidence in Rheinmetall's switch technology. While the company continues to prioritise its defence business, this deal offers a positive development for its automotive supply division, which has been facing headwinds. The switches, with their efficiency-enhancing features, are set to improve the electric vehicle offerings of the prominent US automaker.
