Romania's EV Market Sees Mixed Developments: Dacia Retains Lead, Charging Infrastructure Grows
Romania's electric vehicle (EV) market saw mixed developments in 2024 and 2025. Despite a market contraction, Dacia retained its lead in the stock market, while charging infrastructure grew. However, interest in EVs remains high, with 75% of drivers considering another EV purchase.
Dacia sold 3,263 Spring EV units in 2024, maintaining its top spot in the stock market despite a 50% sales decrease. This followed a market contraction of about a third due to changes in the 'Rabla Plus' program and reduced subsidies. The program, managed by the Environmental Fund Administration, aims to boost EV adoption.
Romania's charging infrastructure expanded by 33% in the past year, reaching over 4,500 points, thanks to private investment and public funding. Despite this growth, only 20% of the target 22,400 charging points by 2026 was completed by the end of 2024. The country now ranks 27th in global EV charging infrastructure, dropping seven places from 2024.
The largest charging hub in Romania, with 34 points up to 400 kW, was opened in May 2025 on the A1 motorway. However, Romania scored 42 out of 100 in the 2025 'EV Charging Index', a four-point decrease, indicating challenges in charging accessibility.
Interestingly, 40% of EV charging in Romania occurs at home, one of the lowest rates globally. Additionally, 37% of Romanians drive less than 10,000 km/year in their EVs, the highest proportion among countries analyzed.
While Romania's EV market faced setbacks in 2024 and 2025, with a market contraction and decreased charging index score, there's strong interest in EVs, with 75% of drivers keen on purchasing another one. Infrastructure growth, though slow, is supported by both private and public investment. Addressing charging accessibility and increasing charging points will be crucial for Romania to improve its EV market outlook.
