Samsung and Sony Batteries Linked to 100+ Fires in Japan: Recall Notifications Need Improvement
Samsung and Sony, two prominent electronics manufacturers, have grappled with a substantial issue involving their lithium-ion batteries in Japan. Over the past three and a half years, at least 100 fires are suspected to have been caused by these batteries, resulting in recalls. Injuries have occurred in some of these incidents.
The recalled products span various devices, including portable chargers, batteries for power-assisted bicycles, and personal computers. Manufacturers or distributors are responsible for notifying the public and conducting recalls. However, lawyer Nakamura Masato suggests improving these notification methods, such as sending repeated emails or postcards, to ensure consumers are adequately informed.
One such incident occurred in July 2021 on the JR Yamanote Line in Tokyo. A recalled portable charger caught fire, injuring five people. According to the Consumer Affairs Agency, around 400 fires linked to products using lithium-ion batteries have been recorded in Japan between 2018 and August 2021.
The recurring fire incidents underscore the need for enhanced public notification during product recalls. While Samsung and Sony have recalled their defective lithium-ion batteries, ensuring consumers are aware of these recalls is crucial to prevent further injuries and incidents.
