Samsung Introduces Galaxy Update: Enhancing Android to Resemble iOS Experience
In a move aimed at bolstering device security, Google has introduced its Advanced Protection Mode as part of Samsung's One UI 8, based on Android 16. This high-level security feature offers users a simple and effective way to safeguard their data.
The Advanced Protection Mode comes with several key features designed to minimise risks. It prevents the installation of apps from outside the Google Play Store, thereby reducing the risk of malware or malicious software. It also blocks access to your device’s data when connected to a computer via USB, protecting sensitive information from unauthorised retrieval. Furthermore, it disables connections to 2G networks, which are considered less secure and more susceptible to interception or attack.
The activation process is straightforward. Users can enable Advanced Protection Mode on their Samsung device running One UI 8 by opening Settings, selecting Google, tapping the All services tab, scrolling down to the Personal & device safety category, and opening Advanced Protection. They then toggle "Device protection" to the on position and tap "Turn on." A restart may be required to finalise some protections.
This mode is optional and while designed for high-risk users such as those targeted by sophisticated attackers, it is available to anyone seeking enhanced device protection. It also includes automatic device locking if theft is detected and requires biometrics or a screen lock to disable the mode.
It's important to note that the Advanced Protection Mode is different from Google's Advanced Protection Program, which goes further and restricts some online and on-device activities. However, it does not have the same level of restrictions as Apple's Lockdown Mode.
Samsung's One UI 8 upgrade also includes its Knox ecosystem, reinforcing the security of all Samsung devices by creating a mini walled garden. The upgrade will also bring Google's most significant upgrade of the year to Samsung phones, as they transition to Android 16.
In addition, the One UI 8 upgrade includes an enhanced Secure Folder with a new "kill switch." Forbes warns that it is easy for someone to steal all your passwords, making these security enhancements particularly timely and relevant.
Android Authority confirms that Galaxy phones eligible for One UI 8 will receive the "powerful" new update, providing users with a robust, system-wide security solution that is easy to manage and offers peace of mind for those concerned about privacy and device integrity.
Technology advances with Samsung's incorporation of Google's Advanced Protection Mode in One UI 8, based on Android 16, offering enhanced device security for all Samsung users. This security feature, available on Samsung devices, prevents app installations from outside the Google Play Store, blocks USB data access, disables 2G network connections, and requires biometrics or a screen lock to disable the mode.
