Samsung Unveils AI-Powered Recipe Application Dubbed 'Food'

Samsung is introducing an AI-powered food and recipe app named Food, boasting over 160,000 recipes. According to an announcement on Wednesday, this app expands upon Samsung's acquisition of Whisk, a food database acquired in 2019.

The app, accessible in eight languages, will be accessible in 104 countries, providing users with control over their cooking appliances, personalized meal plans, and suggestions for new recipes. Vision AI technology will be implemented starting in 2024, enabling the app to discern nutrition information by simply capturing a meal's image and suggesting recipes based on the user's available ingredients, as per Samsung's announcement in a news release.

Vision AI utilizes machine learning (ML) to process information from digital images and videos, making recommendations based on the data received.

"Our daily meals and cooking methods play a significant role in our lives, and we all enjoy cooking and sharing meals together," Chanwoo Park, the Executive Vice President and Head of the Service Biz Group of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics, stated in the news release. By connecting digital appliances and mobile devices across the Samsung ecosystem, and assisting users from shopping list to dinner plate, Samsung's Food app utilizes advanced AI capabilities to deliver a highly personalized, all-in-one food experience that users can manage directly from their fingertips.

Although Samsung's press release offers download links for Food on iOS, Android, and Samsung Family Hub smart appliances, users are currently directed to the Whisk app, which served as the foundation for Food. Samsung has not yet responded to Gizmodo's request for more information.

Whisk's extensive database provided the Food app with suggestions based on users' preferences and seasonal foods. Samsung Next, its software and services innovation hub, adopted the Whisk food platform to enter the food industry, following the production of its Samsung smart appliances. The new app now enables users to connect their appliances, and the company is now taking this one step further by incorporating AI functionality.

Samsung plans to introduce additional features in the upcoming months and intends to integrate it into the Samsung Health platform, providing users with enhanced nutritional logging and diet management, as reported.

The Food app's AI capabilities will be enhanced further with Vision AI technology starting 2024, allowing it to analyze meal images for nutrition information and suggest recipes based on user ingredients. In the future, tech and technology advancements in Samsung's Food app could revolutionize personalized meal planning and cooking experiences.
