Scientists at PLA unveil groundbreaking technology powering the swiftest coilgun globally.

Chinese researchers have made a significant advancement in coil gun technology by developing a capacitor-free system, as detailed in a recent publication of China's Journal of Gun Launch & Control. The novelty lies in using lithium batteries as the power source, eliminating the need for bulky capacitors that had previously imposed limitations on rapid energy discharge.

Coil guns traditionally rely on capacitors for their high-speed energy discharge, but the reliance on these devices resulted in lag times during charging, capping the firing rate. This challenge was shared by early Chinese prototypes and the US-made GR-1 "Anvil," which managed only 100 rounds per minute.

However, the Chinese innovation mitigates this issue by providing a continuous power supply that enables a significant increase in firing speed. The experimental rifle, featuring 20 stages of 25 mm long copper coils, has been designed for optimized acceleration, with power activated and cut only at appropriate moments during the projectile's travel.

The system also incorporates safety features, such as safety fuses to prevent battery overload during high peak currents of up to 750 amps. This development has led to a remarkable achievement—a firing rate of 3,000 rounds per minute, surpassing traditional firearms and other electromagnetic weapons.

This breakthrough marks a significant step forward for the Chinese electromagnetic coil gun technology, demonstrating its potential to revolutionize the field of weaponry. Further research is expected to explore additional advancements and the practical applications of this groundbreaking innovation.

The Chinese innovation in coil gun technology has moved past the traditional reliance on capacitors, using lithium batteries instead to provide a continuous power supply, which significantly increases the firing speed. This revolutionary design has facilitated a firing rate of 3,000 rounds per minute, exceeding the capabilities of traditional firearms and other electromagnetic weapons, further showcasing the potential of science and technology in advancing the military field.
