Kohl's Expands Self-Pickup Service Nationwide Ahead of Holiday Season

In a move to streamline operations and offer a more streamlined shopping experience, department store chain Kohl's announced on Wednesday the expansion of its self-pickup service to all its 1,100 store locations across the country. The self-pickup service allows customers to collect their online orders within two hours from the designated self-pickup areas at their local Kohl's stores.

Customers who select 'In-store pickup' at checkout will receive an email specifying the location of their order in the designated self-pickup area. Upon arrival at the store, customers will follow a series of steps to retrieve their order—they must click on the emailed link to open a "pickup pass," and then use in-store signage to locate the self-pickup area. Once in the self-pickup area, customers must select 'start pickup' on their mobile device, enter a four-digit code, and their order location bin number will be displayed on their phone. After grabbing their order, they can select the "complete my order" button to finish.

If customers require assistance with the process, they can click a link on their mobile device to ask for help from an associate. The self-pickup service aims to help customers skip lines during the holiday shopping rush.

"Our teams have been working hard to ensure Kohl's Self-Pickup service was available for all of our customers ahead of the holiday rush," said Siobhán Mc Feeney, Kohl's chief technology officer. "At Kohl's, we're focused on listening to what shoppers want, and using technology to make it as easy as possible for families to get everything they need quickly, and through a simple experience."

Kohl's initially rolled out in-store pickup to all of its store locations in 2015. In early July, the company rejected a takeover bid from Vitamin Shoppe owner Franchise Group and lowered its Q2 sales estimates from a low-single-digit decline to a high-single-digit decline, citing macroeconomic issues including inflation. Kohl's is also contemplating monetizing its real estate.

Industry observers believe that the expanded rollout of Kohl's self-pickup service is a testament to the changing retail landscape and the growing demand for convenient and efficient shopping options, especially during the hectic holiday shopping season.
