SHS Signs 10-Year Green Hydrogen Deal, Aims for CO2 Neutrality by 2045

SHS-Stahl-Holding-Saar, a major steel producer, has taken a significant step towards greener operations. The company has signed a 10-year supply contract with Verso Energy for green hydrogen, set to commence in 2029. This move aligns with SHS's long-term goal of achieving CO2 neutrality in steel production by 2045.

Verso Energy will supply around 6,000 tons of hydrogen per year to SHS, meeting EU 'green' criteria. This hydrogen will be produced at the 'CarlHYng' project in Carling, France, where Verso Energy is investing over 100 million euros to build an electrolyzer. The hydrogen will then be transported via the mosaHYc pipeline network to SHS's steel site in Dillingen.

In the final expansion stage, SHS plans to use up to 120,000 tons of hydrogen per year. This ambitious plan is supported by Power4Steel, which is receiving funding of 2.6 billion euros from the federal and state governments. SHS aims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 55% by the early 2030s through the use of hydrogen and new plant technology.

SHS's partnership with Verso Energy for green hydrogen supply, along with its planned increase in hydrogen usage and emission reduction targets, demonstrates a commitment to sustainable steel production. These initiatives bring SHS closer to its goal of CO2 neutrality by 2045.
