Skylo & Qualcomm Bring Satellite Connectivity to Smartphones
Skylo, in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, has announced a groundbreaking development in smartphone connectivity. The CTO and co-founder of Skylo, Andrew Nuttall, expressed excitement about integrating satellite capabilities into everyday use-cases, powered by the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System.
The Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System, developed by Qualcomm Technologies, maximises data speeds, enhances call connectivity and coverage, and extends battery life on mobile devices. This technology is widely used in various segments, including smartphones, IoT devices, wearables, and automotive, to facilitate 5G connectivity.
Skylo's innovative use of Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) allows comprehensive satellite connectivity to smartphones using Snapdragon X80. This approach eliminates the need for carriers to allocate terrestrial spectrum or navigate extensive regulatory hurdles. Skylo's global non-terrestrial network (NTN) utilises dedicated MSS spectrum, reaching nine Earth stations across six partner constellations. This extensive coverage spans over 50 million square kilometres, enabling direct communications over satellite. Users can now enjoy two-way text messaging, location sharing, and SOS notifications to emergency services, even in areas with limited or no terrestrial network coverage.
Francesco Grilli, vice president of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, praised this collaboration with Skylo, highlighting the significant strides it brings to smartphone connectivity.
Skylo and Qualcomm Technologies have joined forces to introduce satellite connectivity for smartphones powered by the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System. This collaboration expands the reach and capabilities of mobile devices, offering users reliable communication even in remote or underserved areas. The integration of satellite capabilities into everyday use-cases promises to revolutionise the way we stay connected.
