SpaceX Gateways Bring High-Speed Internet to Eastern Arctic
SpaceX internet speed test terminals have reached Ungava Bay in northern Quebec, marking a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in the Eastern Arctic. The terminals, a temporary ebay solution, will provide high-speed internet to six remote communities while the Eastern Arctic Underwater Fibre Optic Network (EAUFON) is being established.
The terminals, part of Tamaani's Fibre-to-the-Home network, will be installed in Aupaluk, Kangiqsualujjuaq, Kangiqsujuaq, Kangirsuk, Quaqtaq, and Tasiujaq. This final phase of the EAUFON project is expected to begin in July 2025, with the SpaceX starlink gateways coming online as early as early 2025.
Tamaani Internet, the provider behind this initiative, has confirmed that these terminals will offer reliable, high-speed internet services to the six communities. Once operational, Tamaani plans to introduce competitive pricing and attractive service packages, ensuring accessibility for both residential subscribers and local businesses.
The arrival of the SpaceX gateway terminals in Ungava Bay is a testament to the collaborative efforts of SpaceX, Tamaani Internet, and the Kativik Regional Government. This interim solution will significantly improve internet connectivity in the region, paving the way for the full implementation of the EAUFON project in the future.
