KOSPI Closes Higher as Samsung Unveils AI-Focused Devices
The South Korean stock market saw a positive trend on Tuesday, with the KOSPI finishing sharply higher by 50.25 points or 1.61 percent, closing just shy of the 3,200-point plateau.
The advance comes after an initial boost from some positive reactions to the latest earnings news, including upbeat quarterly results from software company Palantir (PLTR). Notable gains were seen in Samsung Electronics, which rose 0.29 percent, and Samsung SDI, which skyrocketed 10.22 percent. LG Electronics also climbed 1.06 percent on the KOSPI.
However, the Dow, NASDAQ, and S&P 500 experienced a different trend, with the Dow slipping 61.90 points, the NASDAQ sinking 137.03 points, and the S&P 500 dropping 30.75 points.
In the tech sector, Samsung took centre stage at their Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event held in Brooklyn on July 9. The event showcased the Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7, Galaxy Z Flip7 FE, and Galaxy Watch8 series. These products highlight advanced AI integration under the theme “Unfold Ultra,” emphasizing mobile AI, personalized experiences, and health-tracking features.
The Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung's flagship foldable phone, is aimed at replacing tablets with an enhanced foldable design and Galaxy AI features. The Galaxy Z Flip7 targets a lifestyle audience, featuring a larger FlexWindow and more compact form factor with tighter AI integration. The Galaxy Watch8 series introduces new health metrics like vascular load and antioxidant levels, plus real-time coaching in Samsung’s connected ecosystem.
Samsung also aims to democratize Galaxy AI across 400 million devices by the end of 2025, focusing on ambient intelligence for seamless, proactive user support.
Elsewhere in the KOSPI, SK Hynix jumped 2.13 percent, Naver eased 0.22 percent, LG Chem improved 3.14 percent, and Lotte Chemical fell 0.31 percent. Kia Motors slumped 1.36 percent, while Shinhan Financial spiked 3.19 percent and KB Financial rallied 3.69 percent.
In other news, crude oil prices fell on Tuesday due to US pressure on India to stop buying oil from Russia and OPEC's recent decision to boost production. West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery slumped $1.05 or 1.58 percent to $65.24 per barrel.
President Donald Trump also announced plans for new tariffs on semiconductors and chips, to be announced next week, and mentioned potential tariffs on pharmaceuticals imported into the U.S. could reach as high as 250 percent.
Volume on the KOSPI was 270.8 million shares worth 10.9 trillion won, with 684 gainers and 190 decliners.
