CATL's Subsidiary Secures First Round of External Financing, Signaling Shift in Automotive Manufacturing

Contemporary Amperex Intelligence Technology (Shanghai) Limited (CAIT-SH), a subsidiary of the Chinese battery company CATL, has recently secured its first round of external financing, marking a significant milestone in its growth and development. The funding, worth approximately $280 million in US dollars, will be used to accelerate capacity expansion and technological iteration for the skateboard chassis platform, enhancing electrification solutions for its automaker partners.

The financing round, which was completed in July 2025, has resulted in a post-investment valuation of over 10 billion yuan (around $1.26 billion). This represents the initial involvement of outside investors, transitioning the subsidiary from being wholly-owned by CATL and affiliated companies to opening up to the capital market.

In terms of commercial milestones, the first vehicle featuring the CAIT-SH skateboard chassis was announced in August 2024 (the Neta S shooting brake), although operational issues delayed mass production. In December 2024, CATL Intelligent launched the “Rock Solid Chassis,” a higher safety version adopted initially by Avatr. The skateboard chassis now has cooperation agreements with several mainstream automakers including Avatr, JAC Group, BAIC New Energy, and Changan Mazda, broadening its presence in the industry.

This development signals a potential paradigm shift in automobile manufacturing by introducing a modular "skateboard" platform that promises increased R&D efficiency, enhanced safety, and lower manufacturing costs. This could reshape vehicle production akin to assembling Lego blocks.

CATL, a significant player in the global battery industry, made its debut on the Hong Kong stock market on May 20. Since then, its share price has been volatile, but it has surged in Hong Kong trading, reaching HK$449.4 on [date not provided], representing a 6.15% increase from its previous level and a 71% rise compared with its offering price of HK$263.

This financing and expansion underpin CATL Intelligent's strategic push beyond battery technologies to integrated vehicle platforms, positioning it as a key innovator in automotive manufacturing technology. The interim results announcement, expected on July 30, is another significant event for CATL, following its successful debut on the Hong Kong stock market and the anticipated announcement of its interim results.
